Song of The Whale, and the secret Sisyphus in all of us.
The Loneliest animal in the world,
or is it?
The loneliest, biggest animal in the world. The soundless tidal wave in the depths of oceans too blue and too populated to ever be asleep.
The Whale sings at a frequency of 52Hz, a frequency that cant be heard by anyone else including other whales. Is it really lonely,
or just plain wonderful.
What is so unthinkably, unbearably lonely about vast open spaces that can be filled with nothing but just your song? Imagine having the whole sea to yourself, he sings because he can. Because he probably loves to. Is it really lonely or is it what a God is.
Is God lonely up there in the sky like astronauts are?
Is the whale lonely down here like God is up there?
Whatever a God is, you are a reflection of it, Whale.
Isnt it so freeing to have your entire world, all the vast blue space to no one but just yourself.
The mirror that the Astronaut holds up to the Whale is not a mirror is it, its just surprise.
Its anti-reflection, its opposites that may look alike but arent. The Astronaut feels lonely in the sky because he's always shared his world with many, and he can only breathe in his tiny glass house of a suit container. What a curse to be surrounded by the universe and not be able to breathe in the stars.
In all that vastness to find yourself confined to a tiny coffin. He cannot fill all the space in the universe with his song even if he wants to. So he misses home, he cant fill his world with his song either-
but the whale?
The Whale is the only God of the Sea, he can sing whatever he wants and what a secret love song must it sing to everything and anything it meets there. All the sky in the water and all the blue of the world and all the black of the night, reserved for none but just One.
Who wouldnt want to be a god like that? or a king. Or just the greatest thing to have ever existed, one of a kind, not the loneliest miracle in the world, but the most majestic. Just. One.
Does the whale feel lonely because it cant be heard by anyone else, or does he marvel at his own existence?
Maybe he sings because he's so happy to rule the waters alone. A whole dimension reserved for the preciousness of just your song. Imagine just how precious is the song he sings. How unique, how unlike anyone else's. Something so utterly, so truly Yours.
In a world where everything belongs to everyone- our bodies, our money, our homes- to have a dimension reserved for your self expression.
I wonder every now and then what he sings about. Maybe fish or the stars in the water or perhaps who has the smallest dicks among all the fish. Does he ever praise himself?
On days when I'm overwhelmed, I imagine myself floating in the blues of endless waters. Far away from civilisation, from this world I walk in, from people and society and rules and feelings. from language, from pricetags. And I lie there suspended, floating, in my watery kingdom- all alone and happy. I feel so safe, so unbothered. I can sing in languages that exist for 5 seconds only and just once like a firework, I can make any sound in the universe and call it a song. no one is there- thats the gift.
Maybe the Whale is lonely. maybe he wishes for a soulmate too. Maybe he wants to share a song with someone else- but thats just what most people think. Who has ever asked the whale anyway? Havent we all just made assumptions (and always the worst ones at that) about everything we dont understand and cant comprehend? We project our own sadness onto things that are far too majestic, way too cosmic for us to ever understand, and we call it a fact bc its so relatable to us. The Whale has always been on its own, marching to its own beat so we declare him lonely.
Why not declare him beautiful instead?
Like the Sisyphus story, everyone thinks its oh such a curse to do the same thing over and over and never reap the benefits- but was he ever really suffering?
I think he was fucking happy, maybe he loved pushing the rock, the effort of it- to watch it fall again only to lift it up and giggle at the resilience of it all- in the face of blowing winds, in the face of the rock. In the face of a madness most people are too simple to ever find delight in. It was his song that no one could hear. We blow bubbles and they burst and disappear, does that make blowing bubbles a sad thing then? could you not wake up everyday and blow bubbles if you fall in love with them?
Human beings have a tendency to think everything is sad, because we feel sadness so very deeply that nothing much compensates for it. Nothing makes us so irreversibly happy, so we feel only sadness can fill the worlds within us, and oh how it floods us. how we drown. But thats only bc true happiness and true freedom are no longer concepts in the human society. We are slaves of consumption, of over consumption in fact. we slave away at unfulfilling things, we put the least effort in things that matter bc we are reward oriented. Why should one write a love letter for a one night stand? Its stupid, its madness. And this madness we run from - it was always within. It floods us.
The Whale, Sisyphus- they are not lonely or unhappy, they are quite the opposite. Theyre free to do whatever they want and the whole world is at their feet. If I could wake up each day and just do one thing for the rest of my life, I'd probably brew coffee or sing songs for all eternity- the thing about no one being able to hear the Whale's song also means that its not up for consumption.
No rules, no pricetags, no judgement- its what a song has fundamentally, at its very, very core always been - free.
We sing for ourselves, not for others. We put what we cant explain to a tune- words or not- its a song and it exists because the one who sings it does- but thats not what music is anymore. not in this world, not in its perfectly tailored tunes and lyrics designed to cater to very specific people. To scratch the itch of their suffering- to put words in their mouths that arent their own. Oh youre in love? It must smell like roses and feel like shallow clearwater lapping at your ankles- and sunsets. But is that how it feels really? for everyone? or is that what we've been told its supposed to feel like? Isnt that why so many of us are confused bout what it actually means to feel something as mad and cosmic and undeniable as that four leaf clover of a word.
Reading the word Love, how many of us dont think of people? Love was never so shallow but now it is because our songs are not our song.
In this world we cant imagine it, in this world of rules and technicalities and people pleasing, how many of us can actually sing a song that breaks every fundamental rule of singing, of what makes up a song?
Would you make funny sounds on a microphone and call it a song? no, you'll have folks throwing eggs at ya. The Whale is free, He can sing about anything and everything. We project our own floods onto it, onto God, onto kings , onto anyone who is free from the chains of community, of society.
Anyone who floats alone is lonely- false.
Sisyphus, probably would relate the best to the Whale-
"I dont understand what you do and why you do it everyday, or exactly what you love about this thing- but I understand madness and the inherent freedom of being unique and the hilarious humour of the cosmos, and love and myself - and so I may not understand the nature of what you are or what you do, but the sheer miracle of it-
I can comprehend."
